According to a statement by the Uludağ Automotive Industry Exporters’ Association (OIB), the exports of the Turkish automotive industry were affected by both the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak and the automotive factories’ suspension of production for maintenance and repair activities last month.
The automotive industry’s August exports amounted to 1 billion 545 million dollars, down 11 percent compared to the same period last year. The share of the industry, which ranks second in Turkey’s exports, was 12 percent.
The sector’s 8-month exports in the January-August period were recorded as 14 billion 536 million dollars.
Supply industry exports 729 million dollars
In August, exports on the basis of product groups were recorded as 729 million dollars in the supply industry, 406 million dollars in passenger cars, 237 million dollars in motor vehicles for the transportation of goods and 79.9 million dollars in buses-minibuses-midibuses.
Exports to Germany, the country with the highest exports in the supply industry, increased by 8.9 percent in August, France in second place increased by 10 percent and Italy in third place increased by 26 percent. Among other markets, exports to the United Kingdom decreased by 8 percent, while exports to the USA increased by 8 percent, Romania by 27 percent and Spain by 23 percent. While exports to Russia and Belgium decreased by 4 percent and 1 percent, exports to Poland and Morocco increased by 12 percent and 56 percent, respectively.
OIB Chairman Baran Çelik, who shared his views in the statement, shared the information that the only increase in August on the basis of main product groups was experienced in the supply industry.
Çelik said, “In the supply industry, we recorded an increase of 9 percent to Germany, 10 percent to France and 26 percent to Italy, our largest markets. Despite the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak, EU countries continued to be our largest market with a share of 72 percent.”
