178 thousand new domestic investors added to the stock market in the first quarter

According to the information compiled from the Stock Exchange Trends Report prepared by the Central Registry Agency (MKK) and the Investor Relations Association (TÜYİD), 357 companies were traded in the BIST TÜM index in Borsa Istanbul as of the first quarter.

Nominal transaction volume broke a record in the BIST ALL index, increasing by 117 percent in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. The uncertainty in the markets due to the new type of coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic was effective in this increase in transaction volume.

During this period, the transaction volume of the BIST ALL index in dollar terms increased by 78 percent and reached 172 billion 228 million dollars. The transaction volume of the index in TL terms doubled and rose to 1 trillion 44 billion 528 million liras.

While transaction volumes in TL terms decreased by 4 percent in the banking index to 146 billion 759 million liras in the first quarter compared to the same period of the previous year, they increased by 229 percent in technology to 85 billion 916 million liras, and in holding and investment increased by 227 percent to 105 billion 884 million liras. TL transaction volume increased by 213 percent in the trade index, 128 percent in the services index, 101 percent in the industrial index and 69 percent in the financial index.

Thus, the only index whose transaction volume in TL terms decreased in the first quarter compared to the same period last year was banking.

1 million dollars of foreign investment inflow to the technology index

There was a net foreign outflow of 2.4 billion dollars from Borsa Istanbul in the first quarter of the year. The only index with net foreign inflow was technology with $1 million. The index with the highest net foreign outflow was recorded as the financial index with 1 billion 94 million dollars.

The share of foreign investors in Borsa Istanbul’s transaction volume decreased by 4 points to 26 percent in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same period last year.

As of the first quarter, it was seen that banking had the highest share in the transaction volume of foreigners with 35 percent, and industrial and technology had the lowest share with 25 percent.

Nearly 150 thousand new domestic investors entered the financial index

The total number of investors in Borsa Istanbul reached 1 million 347 thousand 388 in March. 99.2 percent of these investors were domestic and 0.8 percent were foreign investors. In this context, as of the end of March, the number of domestic investors was 1 million 337 thousand 244, and the number of foreign investors was 10 thousand 144.

During this period, there was an increase in the number of foreign investors in all indices except BIST 100. At the end of March, the number of foreign investors increased by 396 in BIST ALL, 207 in BIST 30, and 225 in BIST 50 compared to the same period last year. In the same period, the number of foreign investors in the BIST 100 index decreased by 1,542 to 7,358.

The highest increase in foreign investors in Borsa Istanbul indices was in services with 453, followed by industry with 384. The number of foreign investors increased by 201 in BIST Financial, 194 in BIST Trade, 146 in BIST Technology, 67 in BIST Holding and Investment, and 65 in BIST Bank.

When we look at the number of domestic investors, it was noted that there was an increase in all indices as of the end of March compared to the same period of the previous year. While a total of 178 thousand 272 new domestic investors entered the BIST TUM index during this period, the largest increase in domestic investors was seen in the financial index with 146 thousand 842.

On the other hand, at the end of March, 178 thousand 668 new investors, including 396 foreign investors, were included in the BIST ALL index compared to the same period last year. The number of new investors was 76 thousand 377 in BIST 100, 87 thousand 23 in BIST 30, and 92 thousand 48 in BIST 50.

Investors’ portfolio value increased

The portfolio value of foreign investors in the BIST ALL index increased from 206 billion lira in March last year to 219 billion lira in the same period this year. This figure increased from 114 billion lira to 155 billion lira for domestic investors.

It was observed that the first three countries with the highest portfolio value in Borsa Istanbul in the first quarter remained unchanged and were the USA, Qatar and the United Kingdom. While 1,133 investors resident in the USA had 26 percent of the total foreign investments, the portfolio size of these investors was 8 billion 652 million dollars. The portfolio size of Qataris, who have 26 percent of total foreign investments, was 8 billion 565 million dollars.
