2021 target in tourism: 25 million foreign tourists

While a revival is expected in 2021 with vaccine hopes in Turkey’s tourism; sector representatives started this year with a target of around 25 million foreign visitors.

While Turkey’s tourism, which declined sharply in 2020 due to pandemic-related developments, is expected to revive in 2021 with vaccine hopes; sector representatives started this year with a target of around 25 million foreign visitors.

According to industry representatives, it will take 2022 and 2023 for these numbers, which point to only half of the sector’s performance before the pandemic, to return to normal.

The number of foreign visitors to Turkey was 45.06 million in 2019, while tourism revenues amounted to 34.5 billion dollars. In the first 11 months of 2020, the number of foreign visitors to Turkey decreased by 72% to 12 million.

Commenting at the online promotion meeting of the “14th Travel Turkey Izmir Digital Fair”, Sururi Çorabatır, President of the Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TÜROFED), said: “We need to achieve a target of 25-30 million in 2021. 2021 is the year of crawling, standing up. It will be the year of running in 2022-2023.”

Çorabatır stated that the first decisive factor in reaching this target will be the implementation of the vaccine, and the second factor will be the decline in the number of cases both in Turkey and in countries that send tourists to Turkey.

Firuz Bağlıkaya, President of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), said, “We are targeting half of 2019 in 2021. We are starting to target half of 2019 figures.”

Stating that despite the vaccine news, uncertainties still persist, Bağlıkaya said, “In 2021, a new period awaits the sector in which a much tougher competition will be experienced, the cake shrinks, but those who compete for a share of this cake will be much more aggressive.”

Pointing out that the importance of domestic tourism has increased with the closure of borders between countries during the pandemic process, Bağlıkaya said that as TÜRSAB, they called for the declaration of “Domestic Tourism Mobilization” in Turkey in 2021.

On the other hand, according to the information given at the meeting, Travel Turkey Izmir Tourism Fair will be organized virtually this year due to pandemic conditions. Travel agencies and tour operators from various countries, tourism sector representatives such as hotels and accommodation facilities and airline companies, as well as ministries, consulates, municipalities and development agencies will participate in the “14th Travel Turkey Izmir Digital Fair” to be held on February 25-27 in partnership with İZFAŞ and TÜRSAB.

Bağlıkaya said, “The fair will bring an important activity to the whole region at the point of overcoming the stagnation in tourism with the participation of countries in the Mediterranean basin, international guests, negotiations, agreements and collaborations that will take place within the fair.”
