A first for Turkey! Ranked 59th

Turkey ranked 59th among 189 countries in the 2018 Human Development Index, placing Turkey in the very high human development category for the first time.

The “Human Development Report 2019” prepared by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) based on 2018 data and including the Human Development Index, Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index, Gender-Based Development Index, Gender Inequality Index and Multidimensional Poverty Index was published.

The Human Development Index, one of the indices prepared in the light of data obtained from official statistical institutions of countries, is created as a result of long-term monitoring of the average level of human development in 3 basic dimensions such as long and healthy life, access to information and an acceptable standard of living.

Norway ranks first in human development

According to the index, one of the most widely recognized development indicators in the world, the new generation is shaped around inequalities, education, technology and climate change.

Norway ranked first in the Human Development Index with a value of 0.954 and maintained its top position. It was followed by Switzerland (0.946), Ireland (0.942), Germany (0.939) and China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The countries at the bottom of the list with the Human Development Index value they recorded last year were Niger with a value of 0.377, Central African Republic with a value of 0.381, Chad with a value of 0.401, South Sudan with a value of 0.413 and Burundi with a value of 0.423.

Turkey has moved up a class

Turkey’s Human Development Index value in 2018 was calculated as 0.806. With this value, Turkey ranked 59th among 189 countries and was ranked in the “very high human development” category for the first time. In the previous list, Turkey ranked 64th and was categorized as “high human development”.

In this period, the average index value of countries in the highest human development category was calculated as 0.892, while the average index value of European and Central Asian countries was calculated as 0.779.

Turkey’s index value increased by 39.4 percent in 28 years3

In the index, which is a measure of progress in human development, Turkey has made significant progress in the last 28 years. Turkey’s index value, which was calculated as 0.579 in 1990, rose to 0.806 last year, representing a total increase of 39.4 percent.

In Turkey, life expectancy increased by 13.2 years, average years of schooling by 3.1 years and expected years of schooling by 7.5 years between 1990 and 2018. Gross national income per capita increased by 122.1 percent in the same period.

In the index adjusted for inequality in the distribution of human development, Turkey’s value dropped to 0.675 with a loss of 16.2 percent due to inequality in the distribution of dimension indices. While countries with Very High Human Development Index values lost 10.7 percent on average due to inequality, this rate was 11.7 percent in Europe and Central Asia.

Turkey ranks 66th in gender inequality index

The Gender Inequality Index, which includes findings on gender-based inequalities in reproductive health, women’s empowerment and economic activities, was also announced in the report.

According to the index, which reveals the loss in human development caused by inequalities between women’s and men’s achievements, Turkey ranked 66th among 162 countries with a value of 0.305 in 2018.
