Automotive industry exported 1.2 billion dollars in May

According to the statement made by Uludağ Automotive Industry Exporters Association (OIB), the sector’s exports performed better in May compared to April, when the impact of the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic continued.

Exports of the automotive industry, which exported 1 billion 203 million dollars last month, decreased by 56 percent compared to the same period of 2019. The export share of the sector, which ranks first in Turkey’s total exports, was 12 percent. The exports of the sector in the 5 months of the year decreased by 33 percent and were recorded as 8.8 billion dollars.

In May, exports were recorded as 474 million dollars with a 52 percent decrease in passenger cars, 451 million dollars with a 57 percent decrease in the supply industry, 145 million dollars with a 63 percent decrease in motor vehicles for transporting goods, and 73.5 million dollars with a 64 percent loss in the bus-minibus-midibus group. .

In this period, there was a 60 percent decrease in exports to Germany, the largest market of the supply industry, while 56 percent to Romania, 60 percent to Italy, 71 percent to France, 51 percent to Russia, 76 percent to the United Kingdom and 76 percent to important markets. There was also a 72 percent decrease in the USA.

Export of passenger cars and buses-minibuses-midibuses

In May, it was determined that there was a 46 percent decrease in exports to France, 33 percent to Germany, 87 percent to Italy, 47 percent to the United Kingdom and 55 percent to Spain, which are important markets for passenger cars.

Exports of passenger cars to Slovenia and Belgium increased by 6 percent. The export of motor vehicles for transporting goods decreased by 84 percent to Germany, 71 percent to Italy, 37 percent to the United Kingdom, 46 percent to Slovenia and 57 percent to France.

Sales in the bus-minibus-midibus product group decreased by 73 percent to France, 47 percent to Germany, 92 percent to Italy and 91 percent to Romania.

Exports to Germany, the industry’s largest market, decreased by 57 percent in May to 182 million dollars. Exports were made to France, the second largest market, with a decrease of 55 percent, amounting to 144 million dollars, and to the United Kingdom, with a decrease of 53.5 percent, amounting to 81 million dollars. There was a 76 percent decrease in exports to Italy, 56 percent to Spain and Romania, 55 percent to Poland, 52 percent to the Netherlands, and 81 percent to the USA.

Exports to European Union (EU) countries, the largest market by country group, decreased by 55 percent in May, reaching 925 million dollars. The share of EU countries in the total exports of the sector was 76.9 percent. There was a 66 percent decrease in exports to African countries and a 53 percent decrease in exports to Middle Eastern countries.

Baran Çelik, OİB Chairman of the Board of Directors, whose views were included in the statement, said, “The fact that the number of working days was 4 days less in May due to the Eid al-Fitr holiday also had a negative impact on the export figures. However, we regained the export leadership on a monthly basis in May, which we left in April.” he said.
