Automotive production shrank by 29 percent in the first half

Total automotive production, excluding tractor production, decreased by 29 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period of 2019, reaching 518 thousand 727 units, and total automotive exports decreased by 37 percent in terms of units, reaching 402 thousand 179 units.

Automotive Industry Association (OSD) announced production and export figures and market data for the first half of 2020.

Accordingly, in the January-June period, total production decreased by 29 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 518 thousand 727 units, and automobile production decreased by 26 percent, reaching 362 thousand 397 units. Including tractor production, total production reached 532 thousand 249 units.

All OSD members, who gradually suspended their production in March and April due to the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic measures, started production again in May and gradually increased their production in June.

While total production last month was 103 thousand 273 units, the automotive industry closed April with 11 thousand 164 units and May with 63 thousand 145 units.

The capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry, which continues its normalization process due to the impact of the epidemic, was at 52 percent in the first half of the year. Capacity utilization rates on a vehicle group basis were 53 percent for light vehicles (cars and light commercial vehicles), 34 percent for heavy commercial vehicles and 36 percent for tractors.

Production of commercial vehicles decreased by 36 percent

While commercial vehicle production decreased by 36 percent in the first half of the year compared to the previous year, the contraction in heavy commercial vehicle group production was 17 percent and 37 percent in the light commercial vehicle group.

In the same period, the total commercial vehicle market increased by 31 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 30 percent and the heavy commercial vehicle market by 37 percent compared to the same period last year. Considering the base effect, the commercial vehicle market remained 46 percent behind 2017 in the January-June period. Considering only June, the production of commercial vehicles carrying cargo and passengers was 29 thousand 9 units, and the production of tractors was 3 thousand 172 units.

The Turkish automotive market increased by 30 percent in the first half compared to the same period last year, reaching 261 thousand 902 units. During this period, the automobile market increased by 30 percent again and amounted to 203 thousand 595 units.

Considering the averages of the last 10 years, in the January-June period, the total market fell behind the average by 29 percent, the light commercial vehicle market by 43 percent, the heavy commercial vehicle market by 55 percent, and the automobile market by 23 percent.

In the same period, the share of imported vehicles in the automobile market was 61 percent, while the share of imported vehicles in the light commercial vehicle market was 39.7 percent. The domestic market became active in June due to the effect of constantly postponed demand. Last month, the market increased by 66 percent compared to June 2019, reaching 72 thousand 778. In the same period, the automobile market increased by 58 percent and reached 57 thousand 67 units.

The leader of exports in June was automotive

In the first half of the year, total exports decreased by 37 percent in terms of units compared to the same period of 2019, reaching 402 thousand 179 units.

While automobile exports decreased by 33 percent to 281 thousand 634 units, commercial vehicle exports decreased by 44 percent. Tractor exports decreased by 23 percent compared to the same period of 2019, reaching 6 thousand 128 units.

Turkey’s automotive exports, which were 10 thousand 613 units in April 2020, when trade in Europe, where Turkey exports the most, came to a halt, were 44 thousand 428 units in May. In June, this figure was 70 thousand 813.

According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), the total automotive industry maintained its first place in the export rankings with a share of 14.4 percent in the first 6 months of this year, and realized 15 percent of the total exports in June.

Exports worth 11 billion dollars were made in the first half of the year

In the first half of 2020, total automotive exports decreased by 30 percent on a dollar basis and 28 percent on a euro basis compared to the same period last year.

In the same period, total automotive exports amounted to 11 billion dollars, while automobile exports decreased by 26 percent to 4.2 billion dollars.

In euro terms, automobile exports decreased by 25 percent and were recorded at the level of 3.8 billion euros.
