Outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the Security Council resolution endorsing a ceasefire agreement in Syria.
On December 31, members of the UN Security Council adopted a joint resolution endorsing the Russian-Turkish resolution on Syria. The document calls for support for Moscow and Ankara’s efforts to declare a ceasefire in Syria and renew the peace process.
“The Secretary-General endorses the reduction of violence to save people’s lives in Syria with the help of the Russian and Turkish ceasefire regime,” the statement said.
At the same time, Ban Ki-moon, who stepped down as UN Secretary-General on December 31, said the approved proposal would enable the bagpipe talks to take place in Astana and the UN-led meeting on Syria to take place on February 8, 2017.
