Black hole imaged for the first time

EHT Director Shep Doelman has shared with the public the first black hole photograph ever taken.

Scientists gathered as part of the International Event Horizon Telescope project have published a photograph of the super massive black hole at the center of the M87 Galaxy in the Virgo constellation, 53 million light years from Earth. The photo shows the black hole’s “event horizon”, the threshold region where gravity is at its strongest.

Scientists announced the image, which they created by combining X-ray data obtained from radio telescopes in different parts of the world, at simultaneous press conferences in 5 cities around the world.
