BM 75th General Assembly President Bozkır calls for resolving the tension in the Eastern Mediterranean through dialogue

President of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Volkan Bozkır, regarding the tension between Turkey and Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean, said, “The President of the UN General Assembly has to be impartial. I will look at such situations from the UN’s perspective, not from my country’s. I follow the developments and, in principle, such problems should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy. Turkey and Greece are NATO allies and have strong cultural and economic ties. “My preference, of course, is to see peace and stability in the world and the region,” he said.

Bozkır evaluated the UN summit and its agenda, which will start next week, at the press conference he held after taking over his duties at the ceremony held at the UN General Assembly.

Covid-19 vaccine should be distributed “fairly”

Stating that the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic is a global problem and a global solution is required, Bozkır emphasized that coronavirus vaccine studies are continuing rapidly and that the vaccine should be distributed “fairly”.

The UN Security Council must reflect the realities of the 21st century

Stating that reform in the UN Security Council is extremely important, Bozkır said that the membership and working method of the UN Security Council should reflect the realities of the 21st century, and he hoped that meaningful progress would be made with the active and pragmatic approach and participation of member countries in the reform negotiations process.

Stating that the heads of state and government of some countries were considering coming to New York for the 75th UN General Assembly Meetings, which will start on September 22, but the plans changed due to New York’s 14-day quarantine rule, Bozkır said, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said. He said that it became impossible for him to come to New York due to the 14-day quarantine.

”I’m not worried about the future of the UN”

Bozkır, when asked by AA correspondent whether the UN can survive without reform and despite US President Donald Trump and whether he is worried about the future of the multilateral system, said: “If the UN shows the world that it is doing its job strongly and has the wind at its back, no one or “I don’t think any country will abolish this institution or reduce its power… I am not worried about the future of the UN, I have full confidence that it is irreplaceable and will be with us for another 75 years,” he replied.

UN General Assembly will hold a special session on Covid-19

Volkan Bozkır added that a special session on Covid-19 will be held during the 75th UN General Assembly sessions and that the date of the meeting has not been finalized yet.
