EMRA President Yılmaz: The new instrument of the energy exchange will be electricity produced from green sources

In his speech at the online panel titled “Ecopolitics of Energy and the Future Vision of Turkey’s Energy Markets” organized by Cihannüma Association, Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) Chairman, Mustafa Yılmaz, said that the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic once again revealed the necessity of being at peace with nature and He said that a lesson should be learned from this process.

Noting that in this context, it is necessary to turn to renewable energy instead of hydrocarbon resources, Yılmaz reminded that carbon dioxide emissions have increased by 1 percent annually in the last 10 years.

Stating that this rate poses a great threat in terms of climate change, Yılmaz said, “Ozone holes in the atmosphere repaired themselves during the epidemic period. This actually shows that we can build a balanced life in nature.” he said.

Explaining that renewable energy is of critical importance in ensuring Turkey’s energy independence, Yılmaz continued his speech as follows:

“A Turkey that does not experience environmental problems and has achieved its independence in energy is possible by making maximum use of renewable resources. Turkey has come a long way in the last 20 years in terms of utilizing its own resources, and has greatly increased its renewable energy installed capacity. 66 percent of the electricity produced in April was provided by renewable resources and “The record of the last 20 years has been broken. The steps we will take to provide Turkey’s available capacity from renewable energy will not end. These steps cover not only electricity production, but also many areas such as technology investments, equipment production and R&D activities.”

“We aim for foreign companies to invest more”

Stating that new job opportunities will arise with these steps, Yılmaz said, “In addition, there will be opportunities for consumers who want to use electricity produced from renewable energy. We will open a new vision on this issue and the new instrument of our energy exchange will be electricity produced from green sources. We are working on this issue.” he said.

Stating that a market structure has been created where every citizen can produce the electricity they consume, Yılmaz emphasized that in this sense, nearly 10 thousand people, especially in Anatolia, have invested in the energy sector.

Yılmaz stated that they helped change the investment culture in Turkey and said, “While paving the way for the investments of our own citizens, we cannot ignore large foreign investors. We especially want foreign companies to invest in Turkey. We want the cost of energy to become cheaper in Turkey and to invest more in domestic resources.” “Our aim is. In this context, we provide consultancy to companies not only as a regulatory institution, but also in terms of their investments here.” he said.
