International Transporters Association (UND) shared international road transport statistics for the January-June period with the WORLD for the first time.
When the total export transportation numbers from Turkey are examined, in June compared to the same month of the previous year, Turkish vehicles were transported to 99 thousand 165 units with an increase of 6 percent, while foreign vehicles were transported to 29 thousand 593 units with a 3 percent increase. Thus, 128 thousand 758 transports were carried out in June, with a total increase of 5 percent.
‘We are hopeful for the coming months’
There is a total decrease of 9 percent in the first half of the year. UND Chief Executive Officer Alper Özel said, “During the epidemic period, there was a decrease of up to 28 percent in transportation. However, our export transportation started to increase in June. We are more hopeful than July and the following months.”
When the top 20 countries that Turkey exports to are examined, there was an increase in export transportation to most European countries except Italy, France, Spain and the United Kingdom in the June period. Alper Özel pointed out that the countries where the declines occurred are the countries where operations cannot be carried out fully due to the pandemic. Considering the CIS and Central Asian countries, it was stated that Turkish vehicles are obliged to use the Caspian route because the Iranian gates are still closed to transit routes, and therefore the Caspian route, which has insufficient capacity, cannot meet the need. Özel said, “Therefore, transportation to the countries of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan decreased compared to the previous year. “Although transportations to CIS and Central Asian countries increased by 2 percent compared to the same period last year, most of these transportations resulted from transportations to neighboring countries,” he said.
Özel stated that transportations can be made to neighboring countries compulsorily during this period. Transportation to countries such as Iraq, Syria, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine has increased.
