Following the Competition Authority’s fine against US technology giant Google for unfair competition, a letter written by Google to its business partners was revealed and dropped like a bomb on Turkey’s agenda.
The development, which Google confirmed in a written statement, brought the relations between the Turkish mobile device market and Google to a breaking point.
Google announced to both its partners and the public that it will no longer provide smartphones with the Android operating system that will be released in Turkey with the license required to use Google services.
Which applications will not be available?
Accordingly, Google Mobile Services (Google Mobile Services, GMS) will not be available on new Android operating system phones that will be released after December 12.
Android will continue to be used as the operating system on these new devices, but the following mobile applications of Google will not be installed on these devices: Google Search, Google Chrome, YouTube, Google Play Store, Google Drive, Gmail, Google Duo, Google Maps, Google Photos, Google Play Movies, YouTube Music.
Therefore, foreign Android phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, LG, Xiaomi, Xiaomi, Oppo, as well as local brands such as General Mobile and Vestel will not be able to include Google applications on their new Android phones. However, it will be possible to access these Google services through the mobile web browsers of these phones instead of applications.
No downloading apps from Google Play!
It is worth underlining that since Google’s official app store Google Play Store will not be available on these phones, users will have to be content with the content in the manufacturer’s own store in order to download apps to their phones.
Or they will have to download the APK file of the Google Play Store instead of the official app store and install the apps one by one on their phones. Let us remind you that this process is actually illegal, considered as copy software and is a step that will remove the phones in the hands of users from the warranty.
Huawei had a similar experience
A similar situation, albeit for a different reason, happened with the Huawei Mate 30 model that Huawei introduced a few months ago and put on sale in certain markets.
Within the framework of the trade war between the US and China and the sanctions imposed on Huawei, Google did not grant the Chinese company a GMS license for its new phone models, and the Huawei Mate 30 model was released with the Android operating system but without Google applications.
