Household goods and foodstuffs stood out in cargo

Aslan Kut, President of the Turkish Cargo Courier and Logistics Operators Association (KARID), told AA correspondent via video conference that they owe a debt of gratitude to all employees who ensure the continuation of life, especially health workers who work at the cost of their lives.

Stating that the weekend curfew was a very appropriate decision, Kut said, “We continue to deliver the needs of people for the continuation of life.”

Stating that the sector provides public service, Kut said, “Since cargo workers are in contact with millions of people, company managers have been very sensitive. Our branches are disinfected several times a day. All vehicles, transfer centers are included in this. So far, we have not heard of any positive cases in the sector.”

Emphasizing that they also disinfect cargo packages, Kut noted that while healthcare professionals ensure the continuation of life in this process, cargo and postal companies carry the products necessary for the continuation of life.

Cargo delivery by electronic message

Stating that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Interior worked very well during this process, Kut said that the ministries were in constant contact with the cargo sector.

Stating that they took all measures as the sector from the first day, Kut said:

“We have provided the necessary disinfectants, masks and hygiene materials. No cargo branch is allowed more than 3 customers. We had a request from the ICTA. To make social isolation effective, cargo and courier companies provide services to 7.5 million addresses across Turkey every day. We asked for an exemption for this period in terms of wet signature and identification, and this was accepted. Cargoes are delivered only by electronic message without asking for identification without giving wet signature to the customer who receives the cargo.”

Pointing out that the structure of the cargo carried by the sector has also changed recently, Kut continued as follows:

“Cargoes from company to company have decreased significantly. Cargoes from companies to individuals maintain almost the same level as in the past. There is a change in the product range. Household goods, food and similar products started to move more than electronic products.”

”Let the sector be included in the scope of force majeure”

Stating that thousands of employees have withdrawn from the business environment together with those who are considered to be on administrative leave, and that they provide new employment for this reason, Kut said, “It is very important that this sector is also included in the scope of force majeure. We demand that payments such as SSI and VAT be postponed.”

Stating that the importance of the logistics sector was once again understood during the pandemic, Kut said that as a sector, they demanded a free competition environment.

Kut added that approximately 110 thousand people are currently employed in the sector, and when PTT employees are added, this reaches 150 thousand.
