Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced the industrial production index results for March.
Accordingly, while work was suspended in many areas in Turkey due to the measures taken against the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic, remote working or flexible working models were implemented in the industrial sector.
In March, when these measures were intensified, calendar-adjusted industrial production decreased by 2 percent compared to the same month of 2019, and the unadjusted industrial production index decreased by 1.3 percent.
When the subsectors of the industry are examined, in March, the mining and quarrying sector index decreased by 5.6 percent on an annual basis, the manufacturing industry sector index decreased by 1.9 percent and the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning production and distribution sector index decreased by 0.9 percent.
Monthly changes in industrial production
Seasonally and calendar adjusted industrial production decreased by 7.1 percent in March compared to the previous month.
In the month in question, the mining and quarrying sector index decreased by 2.2 percent, the manufacturing industry index decreased by 7.5 percent and the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning production and distribution sector index decreased by 5.7 percent compared to the previous month.
Calendar-adjusted industrial production increased by 4.4 percent in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the previous quarter, industrial production adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects remained the same.
In AA Finance’s Industrial Production Expectations Survey, economists expected the unadjusted industrial production index to increase by 2.8 percent in March.
