EMITT – Eastern Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Fair, one of the four largest tourism fairs in the world, opened its doors for the 24th time at TÜYAP Fair and Congress Center.
Speaking at the opening of the fair, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the earthquake in Elazığ, his condolences to their relatives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Stating that it is not easy to change the understanding that has existed for decades in tourism and to break the established patterns, Ersoy stated that there are 1.5 billion tourists and a world tourism cake of 1.5 trillion dollars, which is growing above the predictions of the World Tourism Organization.
Pointing out that all countries are aware of the growth of the sector and want to get a share from the revenue, Ersoy said, “As Turkey, we revised our 2023 targets together with the Presidential Government System and increased it from 50 million to 75 million. Although the exact figures will be announced by TÜİK at the end of the month, our 2019 target is 52 million. “We will reach our income target of 34 billion dollars from tourists. In 2020, we target 58 million tourists and an income of more than 40 billion dollars.” he said.
“We need to increase the income Anatolia receives from tourism”
Minister Ersoy noted that the promotion budget was 18 million dollars in 2018 and 75 million dollars in 2019, and this year they increased the budget to 180 million dollars.
Stating that 40 percent of tourism revenues are obtained from Marmara, 40 percent from the Mediterranean, 10 percent from the Aegean and the remaining from other regions of Anatolia, Ersoy continued as follows:
“This is not a sustainable policy. We need to increase the income Anatolia receives from tourism, especially the Aegean. There are more than 40 tourists visiting the same region. If we cannot introduce them to new regions, it will be inevitable for us to lose them to other countries. For this reason, each region will reveal its own tourism potential. “We are working on new investment and promotion policies.”
