Minister Pekcan: Turkey’s e-commerce volume reached 91.7 billion lira in the first 6 months of the year.

Minister of Commerce Ruhsar Pekcan reported that Turkey’s e-commerce volume increased by 64 percent in the first 6 months of the year compared to the same period last year, reaching 91 billion 700 million lira.

Pekcan announced the e-commerce data for the January-June period at the press conference she held at the Ministry.

In her speech here, Minister Pekcan stated that Turkey’s total e-commerce volume was 136 billion lira last year, and that it became clearer during the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic that e-commerce is a critical field of activity.

Stating that all sectors use e-commerce effectively in domestic and foreign trade, Pekcan said, “When we take into account our country’s geo-strategic location and logistics advantages, it is possible for us to become a global e-commerce center.” said.

Stating that, as the Ministry, they support the business world’s membership in e-commerce sites, Pekcan noted that 135 thousand SMEs participated in the Ministry’s “We Stand by SMEs as E-Commerce” campaign and the campaign provided additional employment for 7 thousand people.

Pekcan reported that 3 thousand 761 SMEs were introduced to e-commerce with the campaign and 1.2 billion lira was transferred to SMEs.

Explaining that they have developed the “seal of trust in e-commerce” with the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, Minister Pekcan said, “So far, 17 service providers have received the seal of trust in e-commerce. The processes of other service providers are continuing.” he said.

Stating that 230 thousand people have started to use the “E-commerce Information Platform” opened at the end of March, Pekcan said that 24 thousand people have benefited from the free e-commerce trainings and 6 thousand 500 people have benefited from the e-commerce consultancy services.

Minister Pekcan gave the following information about platform users:

“From the user data, we see that 37.5 percent are between the ages of 25-34, 22.5 percent are between the ages of 35-44, 18 percent are between the ages of 18-24, and 12.5 percent are between the ages of 45-54.” “On this occasion, I kindly request both our citizens and business people to obtain information about e-commerce through the address ‘e-ticaret.gov.tr’ and to register their e-commerce sites to the system.”

“There is a 64 percent increase in e-commerce volume”
Stating that the e-commerce volume reached 91 billion 700 million liras from 55 billion 900 million liras in the 6 months of the year, with an increase of 64 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, Pekcan said, “91 percent of this (83.3 billion liras) comes from domestic expenditures, 5 percent (4.5 billion lira) covers Turkey’s purchases from other countries, and 4 percent covers other countries’ purchases from Turkey.” he said.

Pekcan also touched upon the distribution of e-commerce according to payment methods and said, “58 billion lira (63.3 percent) of the total e-commerce is made by card payments, 30.1 billion lira (32.7 percent) is made by money transfer/EFT and 3.4 billion lira is made by card payments.” (4 percent) was also made via payment at the door.” said.

Pointing out that 60 percent of the total e-commerce is carried out in 3 provinces, Pekcan stated that this is distributed as 47 percent Istanbul, 8 percent Ankara and 5 percent Izmir.

“74 percent of payments are in advance”
Pekcan stated that the average basket amount was determined as 107 liras and 79 kuruş and said:

“This amount was 178 lira for card transactions, 63 lira for money orders, and 70 lira for payments at the door. According to payment systems, on a sector basis, the airline payment basket was 907 lira, 40 lira for food, 76 lira for books and magazines, 167 for electronics, 89 for flowers, 214 for clothing, “We see that it is 150 lira for travel.”

Stating that approximately 74 percent of e-commerce expenditures are cash payments and 26 percent are installment payments, Pekcan said, “68 percent of home and decoration, 45 percent of white goods, 32 percent of electronics, 29 percent of clothing, “7 percent of books and magazines were purchased in installments.” he said.

Pekcan stated that when evaluated on a daily basis, e-commerce volume was higher in the first days of the week and decreased towards the end of the week.
