With the regulation made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the implementation of “flat and standard packages in tobacco products” will start on December 5. As of tomorrow, tobacco products will no longer be produced with old packages. During the one-month period, that is, until January 5, production will be made with new packages and the sale of existing packages in the market will continue.
As of January 5, 2020, only new standard packs can be sold and there will be no old type packs on the market. With the plain and standard package application, it is aimed to eliminate the attractiveness and misleading feature of the packages due to their various colors and graphic designs, and to increase the deterrent effect of health warning messages.
With the new regulation, the color of tobacco product packages has been determined as Pantone 448 C Matte finish single color. The spelling, color and positioning of trademarks, distinctive signs and other mandatory information have been standardized, and the logo, symbol or other signs of the trademark have been removed.
The area of combined (pictorial) health warnings on packs, which will be uniform and of a single color, has been increased from 65% to 85%, and the pictorial warning will be placed on the front as well as the back of the pack. 14 new combined (pictorial) health warnings were introduced. One of the phrases to be included in all packages will be the message “ALO 171 SMOKING CESSATION LINE” in the combined (pictorial) health warnings.
With the new regulation, the distinctive sign determining the type of tobacco product will be placed on the front surface of the packages. The brand and distinctive sign will be written in black on the inner packaging of hookah tobacco product packages and the inner packaging of cigar and cigarillo packages, if any. The production date and production coding information will be written in white on a black background.
In addition, the new packs will include a general warning and information message covering 50 percent of the side surface area. The packs will include the general warning “Smoking kills – quit now” and the information message “Tobacco smoke contains more than 70 substances known to cause cancer”. The information on pitch, nicotine and carbon monoxide cessation values, which currently covers 10 percent of one side of the existing cigarette packs, has been removed, and the warning on the packs stating that “It cannot be sold to those under the age of 18” has been changed to “The penalty for selling to those under the age of 18 is imprisonment”.
14 new messages and pictures
The packs will include 14 new pictorial warnings along with deterrent photographs of people smoking cigarettes. Some of the statements in the pictorial warnings are as follows:
If you smoke, your child is twice as likely to smoke. Half of all premature deaths in lifelong smokers are due to smoking.
Smoking slows blood flow and causes sexual impotence.
Smoking causes premature birth during pregnancy and increases the risk of death, disease and disability in these babies.
Smoking causes chronic bronchitis, which makes every breath difficult.
Smoking is the biggest cause of stroke.
Cigarette smoke contains carcinogens such as benzene, nitrosamine, formaldehyde and hydrogenyanide.
Smoking causes gangrene in the feet.
Smokers die at a young age.
