ISTANBUL – Ordu Street, one of the points with the busiest traffic in Istanbul, was pedestrianized in line with the UKOME decision. Stating that noise pollution has been prevented in the region, Fatih Mayor M. Ergün Turan said, “What is missed all over the world right now is that pedestrians dominate the streets. Currently, this is a trade zone and people, citizens, tourists and tradesmen who come for trade purposes are happy on the streets.” .
The “Ordu Street and Surroundings Pedestrianization and Controlled Traffic Circulation Project” carried out by Istanbul Fatih Municipality was implemented by the decision of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Coordination Center. The project was put into effect in order to eliminate noise pollution and vehicle congestion in Ordu Street and its surroundings, including Laleli sub-streets, and to enable tourists coming to visit historical and cultural places and local and foreign citizens coming for trade purposes to shop and visit in a peaceful environment. In line with the UKOME decision, in addition to the 59 avenues and streets that had a pedestrianization decision in the region, 28 more avenues and streets were pedestrianized and controlled traffic circulation began to be provided in a total of 16 avenues and streets, including Ordu Street, where the tram passes.
Ordu Street and its surroundings, which were closed to vehicle traffic in accordance with the decision, were viewed from the air.
Ordu Street, which was extremely busy due to traffic, was left to pedestrians. Fatih Mayor Ergün Turan inspected Ordu Street. Listening to the problems of the local tradesmen, Fatih Mayor Ergün Turan stated that noise pollution and vehicle congestion in Ordu Street and its surroundings have been completely eliminated.
Turan emphasized that the traffic on Ordu Street is controlled and said, “Registered trucks and vans, commercial taxis and vehicles affiliated with TÜRSAB, which load goods for commercial purposes between 10.00 and 21.00 hours of the day, have a stay of 20 and some 30 minutes, so controlled traffic has been created here.” Of course, the project was a decision that would end the chaos that has been awaited here for years. This decision was taken by UKOME in 2016. Some revisions were made in 2020. And we have been implementing it for 10 days now. As you can see, what is missed all over the world right now “The streets are dominated by pedestrians. Currently, this is a commercial area and people, citizens, tourists and tradesmen who come for trade purposes are happy on the streets,” he said.
“Nearly forty police personnel are working in the region.”
Mayor Turan stated that approximately forty police officers are on duty at every point on Ordu Street and said, “When the vehicles or companies that come here for commercial and tourism purposes give us the license plates of these commercial vehicles, we identify them to the license plate recognition system. As soon as those vehicles approach the door, the door is automatically opened.” .
Gıyasettin Eyyüpkoca, Chairman of the Board of Laleli Industrialists and Businessmen Association, also participated in the investigations. In his statement here, Eyyüpkoca said, “It was a project that we worked hard for and stood behind and wanted very much to happen.”
Stating that citizens and tradesmen are satisfied with the project, Eyyüpkoca said, “The tradesmen’s faces are smiling. The tourists’ faces are smiling. It is a wonderful project, everyone looks at it peacefully and positively, because at least there are no vehicles in the area. There is no gas and exhaust pollution caused by vehicles, there is incredible silence and peace.”
