Shopping Mall Retail Turnover Index increased by 15.9 percent in 2019

The 2019 year-end figures of the Shopping Mall Retail Turnover Index, created jointly by the Shopping Centers and Investors Association (AYD) and Akademetre Research, have been announced.

According to data published regularly every month, the turnover index increased by 17.2 percent in December 2019, compared to the same month of the previous year and without adjusting for inflation, reaching 375 points. Index data increased by 15.9 percent on an annual basis compared to the previous year, reaching 299 points in 2019.

Shopping Mall Retail Turnover Index increased by 17 percent in the fourth quarter compared to the fourth quarter of last year and reached 296 points in the fourth quarter of 2019.

While the turnover per square meter of leasable area in shopping malls was 1829 TL in Istanbul and 1160 TL in Anatolia in December 2019, the square meter efficiency across Turkey was 1428 TL in December 2019.

When the quarterly turnover per square meter was compared with the same period of the previous year and without adjusting for inflation, there was an increase of 17.7 percent in the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter of 2019, square meter productivity was 1331 TL.

Compared to 2018, total turnover (TL) per square meter increased by 16.2 percent in 2019, reaching 1187 TL. Total turnover (TL) per square meter increased by 17.8 percent in Istanbul and 14.8 percent in Anatolia.

There was a significant increase in square meter efficiency in the shoe category

Square meter productivity in the shoe category increased by 27.5 percent, without adjusting for inflation, compared to the same period last year.

Compared to December last year, the square meter efficiency of the technology category in shopping malls was 23.1 percent, the square meter efficiency of the hypermarket category was 22.5 percent, the square meter efficiency of the clothing category was 19.3 percent, the square meter efficiency of the food and beverage category was 11.1 percent, and the other areas category was 11.1 percent. Square meter efficiency increased by 9.6 percent.

Number of visits index

When December 2019 data was compared to the same month of the previous year, it was observed that there was a 3.8 percent decrease in the number of visits index and a 1.0 percent decrease in the fourth quarter compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the number of visits index, the total number of visitors in 2019 showed a decrease of 1.0 percent compared to 2018.

In the statement, he stated that when the results of the Shopping Mall Retail Turnover Index are considered on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, the figures are above the inflation rate and said:

“When we look at the results of December, we observe a 17.2 percent increase in the index. Considering that the annual inflation rate announced for December 2019 is 11.8 percent, it is seen that the increase in the turnover index is above inflation. We feel the effect of New Year’s shopping in December in this increase. On the other hand, we see the results annually “When we evaluate it, the annual increase rate of 15.9 percent is still above the inflation rate. The number of visits decreased both in December and in 2019. Despite the decrease in the number of visits, the continuing increase in square meter efficiency shows that shopping mall visits have become increasingly need-oriented.”
