According to the AA correspondent’s compilation from the Eastern Black Sea Exporters Association (DKİB) data, 1047 tons of tea were exported from Turkey to 75 countries in the first quarter of the year, generating an income of 3 million 875 thousand 510 dollars.
In the same period last year, the country earned 2 million 573 thousand 794 dollars from exporting 880 tons of tea. Thus, tea exports from Turkey increased by 19 percent in quantity and 51 percent in value compared to the same period last year.
Most exports to Belgium
Belgium ranked first in tea exports from Turkey during this period with 1 million 471 thousand 123 dollars. This country was followed by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with 504 thousand 417 dollars and Germany with 422 thousand 793 dollars.
Rize ranked first in tea exports with a share of 2 million 285 thousand 621 dollars, followed by Istanbul with 573 thousand 836 dollars and Ankara with 231 thousand 398 dollars.
“60 percent of tea exports are from Rize”
Şaban Turgut, DKİB Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Tea Sector Committee, said in his statement to the AA correspondent that Turkish tea contributes significantly to the economy of the region and the country.
Pointing out that tea exports experienced a high rate of increase of 51 percent in the 3-month period of the year, Turgut said, “Our tea exports made a good start to 2020 and we are hopeful that export figures will reach higher levels in the coming period.” said.
Turgut added that approximately 60 percent of tea exports are from Rize.
