“As part of the project to enhance civilian oversight in the internal security sector, the first local prevention and security commission meeting took place on April 18, 2013, at the Fatih District Governorship.
The meeting was attended by Fatih District Governor Ahmet Ümit, Chief Technical Advisor Prof. Dr. Sebastian ROCHE, LASİAD (Laleli Industrialists and Businessmen Association) Board Members Mehmet Özbayrak, Sabri Akten, and numerous representatives of civil society organizations.
Prof. Dr. Sebastian ROCHE spoke at the meeting about the reasons for the establishment of the Local Prevention and Security Commission. The meeting also addressed crime statistics, the needs of institutions related to security, and awareness-raising activities.
Information was provided to the participants about the goals and objectives of the project “Enhancing Civilian Oversight of the Internal Security Sector,” which is funded by the EU, supported by the UN Development Programme, and organized by the Turkish Ministry of Interior. The project will be implemented in 7 provinces, and it will be conducted in 4 districts in Istanbul, with Fatih being one of them. As part of the project, Local Prevention and Security Commissions will be established, and commission members will consist of representatives from public and civil society organizations. The commission will address local issues affecting daily life, exchange ideas, and develop “Action Plans” to solve problems, which will then be implemented.
