Akkol, President of the Confederation of Employers’ Associations of Turkey, said that the short-time working support should be extended until economic conditions improve.
Despite the economic administration’s announcement that the short-time working allowance support will not be extended after March 31, the business world wants this decision to be reviewed to protect employment.
Özgür Burak Akkol, President of the Turkish Confederation of Employers’ Associations (TISK), made a written statement and said that there were important developments that would affect the world economy after the announcement that the period would not be extended.
Akkol noted that the chip crisis negatively affected many sectors, especially automotive, production was disrupted during the period when the Suez Canal was closed and mutant viruses brought the risk of new closures.
Akkol thanked for the 33 billion liras of support given to employees during the pandemic period, and asked for the short-time working allowance support to continue until the economic conditions improve, and the minimum wage support to be extended to cover the whole year.
Stating that their priority as TISK since the beginning of the pandemic was to protect the health of employees and employment, Akkol said, “We have provided all kinds of contributions to prevent financial losses for our employees, including periods when we had to stop production. We can proudly say that we have successfully passed the test of protecting the health and employment of our employees in the enterprises we are organized.”
Stating that they have always felt the support of the government during this period, Akkol said, “Especially the short-time working allowance has been a lifeline for our businesses. Only with the short-time working practice, close to 33 billion liras were paid to our colleagues. We would like to thank all our stakeholders, especially our government, for this support and cooperation.”
Emphasizing that the pandemic and the extraordinary conditions brought by the pandemic are still ongoing, Özgür Burak Akkol noted that there are 3 important issues affecting the entire world economy after the decision to end the support.
Pointing to the first of these as the ongoing worldwide chip crisis, Akkol said that this negatively affected the durable consumption and sub-industries, especially the automotive industry.
Stating that the accident in the Suez Canal will also affect the global supply chain, Akkol said that production figures have also fallen.
Akkol said that new mutant viruses may bring new closures in export markets and added, “We find it important to continue with measures to protect employment due to these conditions and the inability of the service sectors to fully recover. In this direction, we believe that the continuation of the short-time working allowance application until the economic and social conditions improve is of critical importance in protecting employment.”
Explaining that the enactment of the minimum wage incentive to cover the whole year can also be a lifeline for businesses, Akkol said, “With the transition to the new normal order all over the world, we wholeheartedly believe that the support to be given to new generation working methods will make a great contribution to continue on our way by increasing our employment. As TISK, we are always ready to work with all our strength to protect and increase employment, which we think is the most important issue of Turkey. We firmly believe that we will further strengthen our employment and social peace in working life with the steps to be taken in cooperation.”
