According to the statement made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, an important regulation regarding trans fats has been implemented with the “Regulation on Amendments to the Turkish Food Codex Regulation on the Addition of Vitamins, Minerals and Certain Other Elements to Foods” published in yesterday’s issue of the Official Gazette.
Within the scope of the regulation, the amount of trans fat in all plant and plant-derived foods to be offered to the end consumer in food sales and mass consumption places cannot exceed 2 percent.
Trans fat, which is naturally found in oils of animal origin, was excluded.
Türkiye implemented it before the EU
The arrangement was made as prescribed by the World Health Organization. Trans fat regulation will come into force in the European Union (EU) on April 1, 2021. In Turkey, food businesses were given a transition period until December 31, 2020. Therefore, Turkey will implement the trans fat restriction 3 months before the EU.
