According to the report of the Turkish Right to Air Platform, Iğdır has the most polluted air in Turkey in terms of international standards, while Ardahan, with an altitude of 1900 meters, has the cleanest air. While it was stated that Ardahan was historically the settlement with the cleanest air in the region, the reason for the pollution in Iğdır, known as the Çukurova of the East, was shown as poor quality coal and low air circulation.
According to the report of the Right to Clean Air Platform, 56 out of 81 cities in Turkey breathed polluted air in 2018 in terms of international standards. The cities with the worst air quality were Kahramanmaraş, Iğdır and Mersin, while Ardahan was the only city with clean air according to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.
