Turkey’s population increased by 1 million 151 thousand 115 people in 2019 compared to the previous year and became 83 million 154 thousand 997 people, while the annual population increase decreased to 13.9 per thousand.
Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced the “Address Based Population Registration System 2019 Results”.
Accordingly, the country’s population, which was 82 million 3 thousand 882 people as of 2018, increased by 1 million 151 thousand 115 people and reached 83 million 154 thousand 997 people last year.
The ratio of the male population was recorded as 50.2 percent (41 million 721 thousand 136 people) and the ratio of the female population as 49.8 percent (41 million 433 thousand 861 people).
Annual population growth rate decreased from 14.7 per thousand in 2018 to 13.9 per thousand in 2019.
The proportion of those living in provincial and district centers increased from 92.3 percent in 2018 to 92.8 percent in 2019.
The proportion of those living in towns and villages decreased to 7.2 percent.
Istanbul’s population reached 15 million 519 thousand 267 people
Accordingly, the population of Istanbul increased by 451 thousand 543 people in 2019 compared to the previous year and reached 15 million 519 thousand 267 people. Istanbul, where 18.66 percent of Turkey’s population resides, was followed by Ankara with 5 million 639 thousand 76 people, Izmir with 4 million 367 thousand 251 people, Bursa with 3 million 56 thousand 120 people and Antalya with 2 million 511 thousand 700 people.
Tunceli was the province with the least population with 84 thousand 660 people. Tunceli was followed by Bayburt with 84 thousand 843 people, Ardahan with 97 thousand 319 people, Kilis with 142 thousand 490 people and Gümüşhane with 164 thousand 521 people.
Elderly population increased
Due to the decrease in fertility and mortality rates, the elderly population increased and the median age increased. The median age in Turkey, which was 32 in 2018, increased to 32.4 in 2019. According to gender, median age increased from 31.4 to 31.7 for males and from 32.7 to 33.1 for females.
In the distribution by provinces, Sinop had the highest median age with 40.8. Sinop was followed by Balıkesir with 40.2 and Giresun with 39.9. On the other hand, Şanlıurfa had the lowest median age with 20.1. Şanlıurfa was followed by Şırnak with 20.9 and Ağrı with 21.8.
According to gender distribution, Sinop had the highest median age for males with 39.5. Şanlıurfa drew attention as the province with the lowest median age with 19.7. Sinop was again the province with the highest median age for females with 42.1, while Şırnak was the province with the lowest median age with 20.5.
Proportion of working age population increased
The proportion of the population in the 15-64 age group, defined as working age, increased from 66.5% in 2007 to 67.8% in 2019. The proportion of the population in the 0-14 age group, defined as the child age group, decreased from 26.4 percent to 23.1 percent, while the proportion of the population aged 65 and over increased from 7.1 percent to 9.1 percent.
The total age dependency ratio, which shows the number of children and elderly individuals per working-age individual, increased from 47.4 percent in 2018 to 47.5 percent in 2019.
The child dependency ratio, which indicates the number of children per economically active individual, decreased from 34.5 percent to 34.1 percent, while the elderly dependency ratio, which measures the number of elderly individuals per working person, increased from 12.9 percent to 13.4 percent. In other words, it was calculated that in Turkey in 2019, 100 people of working age cared for 34.1 children and 13.4 elderly people.
Turkey has 108 people per square kilometer
Population density, defined as “the number of people per square kilometer”, increased by 1 person in Turkey compared to 2018 and rose to 108 people.
While the province with the highest population density was Istanbul with 2 thousand 987 people per square kilometer, Kocaeli with 541 people and Izmir with 364 people were the provinces with the highest population density after Istanbul.
On the other hand, the province with the lowest population density was Tunceli with 11 people per square kilometer as in the previous year. Tunceli was followed by Ardahan and Erzincan with 20 people.
The population density of Konya, which ranks first in terms of surface area, was calculated as 57, while the population density of Yalova, which has the smallest surface area, was calculated as 320.
Foreign population
On the other hand, the foreign population residing in Turkey increased by 320 thousand 146 persons compared to the previous year and became 1 million 531 thousand 180 persons. Of this population, 50.8 percent were men and 49.2 percent were women.
Within the scope of the foreign population, persons with residence or work permits, persons with identity documents and address declaration substituting for residence permits, blue card holders with valid address declaration who renounced Turkish citizenship with permission were evaluated.
Foreigners with a visa or residence permit for a period of less than 3 months for reasons such as courses, tourism, scientific research, and Syrians in the country with temporary protection status were not included in the population.
