Türkiye rose to 6th place in the European automotive market

While Turkey was the only country in Europe that increased its automotive sales during the new type of coronavirus (Covid-19) period in the first half of this year compared to the same period of 2019, it also became the 6th country that sold the most cars and light commercial vehicles.

While many sectors are negatively affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, especially automotive is one of the most affected sectors.

The negative effects of the epidemic continued to be reflected in automotive sales last month and in the first half of the year. While Covid-19 caused great losses in sales in Europe, the Turkish automotive market was also negatively affected by the epidemic. According to the data, the effects of the virus were felt more lightly in Turkey compared to Europe.

38.9 percent decrease in the European automotive market

According to the data compiled by the AA correspondent from the European automobile market evaluation report prepared by the Automotive Distributors Association (ODD) with the data of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the market includes the European Union (EU-26) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries and the UK. In total, all European markets contracted in the first 6 months.

The European automotive market decreased by 38.9 percent in the first 6 months of this year compared to the same period of 2019, reaching 6 million 11 thousand 918 units. In the same period of 2019, 9 million 834 thousand 542 total sales were made.

Looking only at the automobile market, sales decreased by 39.5 percent in the said period and reached a total of 5 million 101 thousand 669 units. In the same period of 2019, the automobile market was 8 million 427 thousand 639 units.

The light commercial vehicle market decreased by 33.8 percent to 758 thousand 166 units in the January-June period of 2020. In the first half of 2019, 1 million 144 thousand 454 units were sold.

Decreases of up to 50 percent in major European markets

When the European automotive market is evaluated by country, according to the total of EU (26), UK and EFTA countries, the biggest decrease in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period last year was in Croatia with 52.4 percent, Spain with 50 percent and Portugal with 48.2 percent. It also happened.

While there was no market that increased its sales in the first 6 months of this year, automotive sales increased by 33.9 percent in Germany, the locomotive country of Europe, 37.3 percent in France, 48 percent in England, 45.1 percent in Italy and Belgium. also decreased by 29.6 percent.

June sales also decreased by 24 percent

Looking only at June, the automotive market decreased by 24 percent and was recorded as 1 million 335 thousand 802 units. In the same month of 2019, 1 million 756 thousand 553 units were sold.

In June, the automobile market decreased by 24.1 percent and the light commercial vehicle market decreased by 13.6 percent compared to the same month of 2019.

According to the total of EU (26), UK and EFTA countries, the highest decrease in June compared to the same month of the previous year was experienced in Portugal with 54 percent, Croatia with 48.9 percent and Lithuania with 44.1 percent, respectively.

The only market that increased its sales in June 2020 was France, with 1.4 percent.

Turkish automotive market rose to 6th place

While no country increased its sales in this period in the total market covering the EU, EFTA countries and the UK, the automotive market increased in Turkey, which showed an example of a successful fight against Covid-19.

Turkey, which ranked 7th in the first quarter of the year in the European automotive sales ranking, rose to 6th place in the first half of this year.

At the end of June this year, Turkey was the only country in Europe that increased its sales again.

Turkey, which became the 7th country in the European automobile sales ranking with an increase of 30.2 percent, positioned itself as the 6th country in the European light commercial vehicle sales ranking with the same increase rate.
