Turkey’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.9 points to 13.8 percent in January compared to the same month of the previous year. In the said period, the number of unemployed was recorded as 4 million 362 thousand people with a decrease of 306 thousand people.
Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced labor force statistics for January.
Accordingly, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over in Turkey decreased by 306 thousand people to 4 million 362 thousand people in January compared to the same month of the previous year. In the same period, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.9 points to 13.8 percent.
Non-agricultural unemployment rate was estimated as 15.7 percent with a decrease of 1.1 points. Unemployment rate increased by 0.1 points in January compared to the previous month.
In the said month, youth unemployment rate including the 15-24 age group decreased by 2.2 points to 24.5 percent. The unemployment rate in the 15-64 age group decreased by 0.9 points to 14.1 percent.
The number of employed persons increased by 109 thousand people in January compared to the same month of the previous year
Accordingly, the number of employed people increased by 109 thousand people in January compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 27 million 266 thousand people. The employment rate decreased by 0.5 points to 44 percent.
In this period, the number of employed persons decreased by 242 thousand in the agricultural sector and 68 thousand in the construction sector, while it increased by 257 thousand in the industrial sector and 161 thousand in the service sector. The share of employed persons was 16 percent in agriculture, 20.7 percent in industry, 5.2 percent in construction and 58.1 percent in services.
Labor force participation rate
The labor force decreased by 196 thousand people in January compared to the same month of the previous year and became 31 million 629 thousand people, while the labor force participation rate decreased by 1.2 points to 51 percent.
In January, the rate of unregistered workers, which shows the share of those working without being affiliated to any social security organization in total employees, decreased by 2.1 points compared to the same period of the previous year and became 31 percent. The rate of unregistered workers in non-agricultural sector decreased by 1.6 points yoy to 20.9 percent.
Seasonally adjusted employment
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 points compared to the previous period and became 12.6 percent. The number of unemployed decreased by 155 thousand people compared to the previous period and realized as 4 million 60 thousand people. Seasonally adjusted employment rate decreased by 0.2 points compared to the previous period and became 45.3 percent. The number of employed people decreased by 101 thousand people and was estimated as 28 million 90 thousand people.
Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate decreased by 0.5 points compared to the previous period and became 51.8 percent. The number of people participating in the labor force decreased by 256 thousand people and was estimated as 32 million 150 thousand people.
