Turkey’s unemployment rate increased by 2.4 points to 13.8 percent in September compared to the same month of the previous year. In this period, the number of unemployed people increased by 817 thousand and was recorded as 4 million 566 thousand.
Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced labor force statistics for September 2019.
Accordingly, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over in Turkey increased by 817 thousand people in September compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 4 million 566 thousand. The unemployment rate increased by 2.4 points to 13.8 percent.
Unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 points in September compared to the previous month.
Non-agricultural unemployment rate was estimated at 16.4 percent with an increase of 2.9 points.
In the said month, youth unemployment rate including the 15-24 age group increased by 4.5 points to 26.1 percent. The unemployment rate in the 15-64 age group increased by 2.4 points to 14.1 percent.
Decline in the number of employed
While the number of employed people decreased by 623 thousand people to 28 million 440 thousand in September compared to the same period of the previous year, the employment rate decreased by 1.7 percentage points to 46.1 percent.
In this period, the number of people working in agriculture and non-agricultural sectors decreased by 108 thousand and 516 thousand, respectively. While 19.3 percent of employed people were in agriculture, 19.5 percent in industry, 5.5 percent in construction and 55.7 percent in services.
Compared to the same period of the previous year, the share of agriculture and services sectors increased by 0.1 and 1.4 percentage points, respectively, while the share of industry and construction sectors decreased by 0.1 and 1.4 percentage points, respectively.
Labor force participation rate falls
While the labor force increased by 193 thousand people to 33 million 6 thousand in September compared to the same period of the previous year, the labor force participation rate decreased by 0.5 points to 53.5 percent. According to the comparisons made for the same periods, while the labor force participation rate for men decreased by 0.9 points to 72.6 percent, it remained unchanged at 34.9 percent for women.
The rate of those working without being affiliated to any social security organization increased by 2.2 points to 36 percent in September compared to the same period of the previous year. The rate of unregistered workers in non-agricultural sector increased by 1.6 points compared to the same period of the previous year and became 23.6 percent.
Seasonally adjusted employment
Seasonally adjusted employment increased by 36 thousand people compared to the previous period and was estimated as 28 million 111 thousand people. Employment rate remained unchanged at 45.6 percent. Seasonally adjusted number of unemployed decreased by 73 thousand persons compared to the previous period and realized as 4 million 553 thousand people. Unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 points to 13.9 percent.
Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate decreased by 0.1 point compared to the previous period and became 53 percent. According to economic activity, the number of employed people increased by 7 thousand in agriculture, 2 thousand in construction and 31 thousand in services, while it decreased by 5 thousand in industry.
